When should you visit Barton Springs Pool?

The hours, and the Thursday rule

Every other day is simple: 5 AM to 10 PM, guarded from 8. Thursday is the odd one out. You can swim at your own risk from 5 to 9 AM, then the pool closes from 9 AM to 7 PM for cleaning, and guarded swimming resumes at 7 PM. If Thursday is your only day in Austin, go before 9 or after 7 — or spend the middle of the day on the water instead of in it, with a kayak or paddleboard on Lady Bird Lake.

When the crowds come

Summer weekend afternoons are the peak, and that’s also when parking costs $3 per hour (weekends and holidays, March 1 to Labor Day — see getting there). A KVUE segment on the pool passed along a local tip I’ll co-sign: aim for 11 to noon. My own answer since 2009 has been dawn. From 5 to 8 AM the water is mostly lap swimmers and steam.

Season by season

The water doesn’t do seasons — it holds 68–70°F all year, straight out of the Edwards Aquifer (more in water temperature). What changes is the gate: admission is only charged from spring break through the end of October, so a January swim is free and nearly private. Summer buys you crowds and a $2–$9 entry fee; winter buys you the same water for nothing.

Rain closures

The pool occasionally closes after heavy rain — creek flooding shut it in June 2026. Before a special trip, check austintexas.gov/ParkClosures. It takes ten seconds and has saved my guests a wasted drive.

Timing an evening around the bats

From roughly April through September, about 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from the Congress Avenue Bridge at dusk — the world’s largest urban bat colony.
