The list, spelled out

Gate staff will turn away coolers, ice chests and thermal bags, food, pets, glass, hard sports balls, portable speakers, tobacco and alcohol. The walk from the lot is long enough that you don’t want to haul a cooler there just to carry it back.

The drink rule

You can bring drinks — in plastic, reusable, twist-top containers. That’s the whole test: plastic, reusable, twist-top. A glass bottle fails on the first word.

Where the cooler crowd goes

Everything banned inside is standard practice at Barking Springs, the free stretch of creek below the dam — coolers, music, dogs, all of it. The trade-offs are in free side vs the pool. And before you reach the gate, know that the ticket kiosks are card-only (payment details).

A rule-free evening on the water

The sunset bat kayak tour includes the kayak, life vest and bottled water — around $50, two hours, free cancellation to 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can you bring food into Barton Springs Pool?

No — food is banned along with coolers and thermal bags. Eat before you come, or take the picnic to the free side below the dam, where coolers are normal.

Are dogs allowed at Barton Springs Pool?

Not inside the pool. Dogs are welcome at Barking Springs, directly below the dam — it’s free and never closes. The comparison is in free side vs the pool.

Can you bring alcohol to Barton Springs?

No alcohol and no glass inside the pool. If a drink on the water matters to you, the Lake Austin boat cruise is BYOB — no glass there either.
